Help - my receiver is possessed!

I have a 3-year old RCA receiver which is actually one of those home theater-in-a-box type things with the DVD player built in. I use it as surround sound for my satellite dish as well. The odd little problem I'm having is that the master volume of the receiver will turn down all by itself while you are watching anything. It even comes up on the OSD. You see the volume level slowly but steadily dropping all the way to zero. Then you have to manually turn it up again. Sometimes you even have to fight with it to go back up to the volume you want. Does anybody know if this is fixable? Is this a mechanical malfunction or is my home theater haunted?

Look for stuck buttons on your remote. Maybe take the remote far away, or pull out the batteries and see if that problem persists.

Could also be buttons/knob on the receiver itself.

If not, try pouring olive oil all over it and chanting in latin.

I had a similar problem once, except my volume went wide open, instead of down. It turned out to be weak batteries in the remote. I put new batteries in, and all was well again. See if that helps you............
Good luck!

Believe it or not, I also has a similar problem develop in a Pioneer receiver I had owned for 3 or 4 years. Occasionally the volume would just start going up. After another year or so, the receiver completely started to act like an complete head case. Not so coincidentally, my cat loves to sleep on top of the receiver in the winter whenever it is turned on. I opened it up, turned on my compressor and blew a startling amount of cat hair out of it. It still didn't work right, but a few days later it started functioning properly and has ever since.

They flutter behind you, your possible pasts.
Some bright-eyed and crazy, some frightened and lost.
