receiver choices

Hello ....im planning on going shopping this afternoon to replace my receiver. I have it narrowed down to 2 different recievers. Im not up to par on all the new stuff so i would appreciate a little help choosing. My choices are the onkyo 805 which is 130 wpc and has 1.3 hdmi, my other choice is the denon 987 which is 110 wpc and has 1.1 hdmi. I dont have a clue in the difference in hdmi, and not sure if i should worry about it. The onkyo is about 100.00 more. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
JR

Re: receiver choices

I think the Denon will handle audio via HDMI a little better than the Onkyo. The new Onkyo's were having a few issues and I am not sure if they have been cleared up as of yet. Both units are nice at there respective price points.

Re: receiver choices

The difference is that hdmi 1.3 receivers can decode Dolby TrueHD, and dts Master Audio. The only problem is that bluray and hddvd players that deliver TrueHD and dts Master Audio to the receiver don't exist yet. And by that time players that can translate those formats into a HDMI 1.1 compatible PCM stream will probably be plentiful.

iirc, the 987 is essentially the same as the Denon avr-2807-- which seems t be highly regarded on this forum.

Re: receiver choices

well i went shopping, i listened to the 2 receivers, and checked them over, ended up buying the onkyo 805. I just got through setting it up and its a big step up from my onkyo 601 that it replaced. Im going to watch a movie tonight, i guess that will be the test, hehe..oh and i ended up buying a new hd dvd while i was there..im sure i'll be in the doghouse when the wife finds the receipt.

That is ok. Just make sure your DOG HOUSE is your theater and you will be fine.
