Whats the best way?

To set the x-overs for the mains, center channel, surrounds side's and surround rears? also how to determine the gains for those speakers also? I have an old Sony STR-DA4es and now that I have almost (<--- Laughing) got my rig where I have always wanted it, I would like to know how to utilize these features on my receiver that I'm running as a preamp.

Thanks! Shannon

Re: Whats the best way?

Your speakers all have a -3db point at about 52Hz. I would start with my crossover for all of those set to 80Hz. You might could cross as low as 70, but I think 80 is probably your best bet.

To set the gain properly for each speaker you will need an SPL meter. Then you can use either the test tones in your receiver or a calibration DVD generate white noise and set the levels based on the readings from the SPL meter. Also, a general rule of thumb is to start with all speakers at -0 and the sub at -5db in the receiver.

Re: Whats the best way?

sorry for the confusion but I meant "I have a treble, mid, bass gains for the mains, center, sides and rear surrounds. I have the overall gains for the speakers set.

Re: Whats the best way?

These sound more like tone controls to me. If so, my advice would be leave them alone, they would probably do more damage than good. That, or let your ears be the judge. As long as it sounds the wany you want it to, who cares what anyone else thinks.
