Speaker/receiver combo opinions plz!

Basicly, i want to know if the Onkyo 674 is worth the extra 200 bucks instead of the Onkyo 604? it doesnt appear to have better features on paper, is there something i'm not seeing that makes it worth the extra wad?

if i go with the 604 ($380), I'll probably get the Klipsch RB-61 theater system ($1700) or the Axiom M22v2, QS4 Surrounds, VP100 Center, and SVS PB10-NSD sub ($1500).
if i go with the 674 ($600), i'll probably go with the SVS SCS-1 surround system (w/SCS-1 surrounds) and the PB10-NSD sub ($1300)

prices are estimates

which rig would you go with? Thanks for the input

Re: Speaker/receiver combo opinions plz!

The 674 offers VLSC on all channels (as opposed to two channels), HDMI video upconversion, and deinterlacing for HDMI output (480i to 480p).

The 604 is limited to HDMI passthrough.

If you would like the ability to upconvert your analog sources (composite, s-video, component) to HDMI then you will want to consider the 674.

Re: Speaker/receiver combo opinions plz!

Gotchya, i didnt realize that...

i'm going to be hooking up my upconverting dvd player, hdtv via hd components, and a PS3

will i need the upconverting feature of the 674? all of those signals are digital right? i dont plan on reverting back to vhs or a shotty dvd player so i dont see where i would need to convert an analog 480i or p signal... is there a senerio i'm not considering?
thanks!

Re: Speaker/receiver combo opinions plz!

ok, i'm not stalking you. shorter this time. only scenario up cnversion necessary for you: you add another hd component, no more hdmi ports, so you run one player on component ins and you lose some video quality maybe?

for those prices i'd seriously consider marantz sr4001 just under $500. here's a comparison between the 3. while on paper it has slightly lower power ratings, i believe the marantz has superior sound and build quality. like the 604, hdmi is pass through only. then i'd pair with the svs package and use the extra $ for cables and other hidden costs of ht set-up like avia and spl meter.

what ever you do don't get the klipsch sub. speakers, ok. sub bad. really it was one of the worst i ever heard.

good luck

HT: Marantz SR8000, PSB Alpha B fronts, Alpha C center, CSW New Ensemble surrounds, Martin Logan Dynamo Sub, Philips DVD, Sony CRT TV

Stereos include vintage Sony receivers/amps into vintage AR and KEF speakers.

Re: Speaker/receiver combo opinions plz!

no prop maxL, thanks for the help.

about upconverting video... if i buy the 604 instead of a 674 and i hook up a ps2 or an old dvd player thru the analog a/v plugs (i assume they mean 'rca' plugs), would they not play thru the hdmi cable because it doesnt upconvert the video or is the quality not quite as good?
^anyone know what will happen in this scenerio?
I guess i dont really know what upconverting does. my upconverting dvd player doest seem especially better than any other dvd player... hdmi is nice and easy though.
