yamaha htr 5990 problem

not sure if it is the receiver or the speaker, but the center channel is really muddy sounding, all low no highs. center is a paradigm 370 v2. i am away from hom eright now, but will be travelling back home in the next couple of days. just wanted to bounce this problem off members here and see if it is something simple or not.

TIA

and yes i have read the manual, but cant seem to remember changing the levels that much

First, perform a simple test, wire an other speaker to the center terminals to determine if it's a speaker or receiver issue.

If a reciever issue, try reseting all settings by running the auto setup feature again. If center channel still "muddy". Enter the manual set-up to see what the settings are. If all looks fine, you may have to exchange the receiver.

Re: yamaha htr 5990 problem

One thing I like to do is run a test tone within the set up menu. If the sound of the center speaker is not the same as the rest, you may need to turn the volume up on the center channel. The test tone also allows you to be sure the rest of your speakers are hooked up properly and calibrated to the volume you want.
Hooking another speaker up to it is the first thing you should do. This may eliminate all other options. Also, you have to remember that your center channel speaker will perform differently based on your sound settings (Surround Enhanced, Music, Movie, 7 Channel Stereo, etc...) and weather you are running a digital or analog signal through it. I know there are so many options, keep trouble shooting. My advice is don't automatically assume its the reciever because that is a pretty intense reciever with a lot of options so make sure you check them all out first.

Re: yamaha htr 5990 problem

thanks for the help, well i got home and after adjusting the center channel in a whole lot of different ways, i tested the center channel, it is hooped. more accurately, the tweeter is not working, or the crossover inside the speaker is not working. going to take it in for an estimate to get fixed. dont really want to spend another $400+ on another center channel. it was working fine in the old HT, was moved upstairs and stored for two months and then it came back down and didnt work.
