Dolby PLIIx - How Do It Know???!
Okay...so I'm sitting there, yesterday, watching Desperado which I haven't seen in about a decade, on Laserdisc. I don't have an RF modulator, so that I can listen to DD encoded LDs in discrete 5.1 (Desperado isn't), so I feed the PCM stereo track via optical out to my receiver and give it the PLIIx treatment, and that does an admirable job. But it was during this particular film that I found out just HOW admirable: It was in the very last scene, after he asks the luscious Salma if he thanked her, to which she answers, "no" and then he assures her that he will and goes to walk off into the sunset with guitar case in hand. She catches up to him in her vehicle and tells him she wants to be thanked right then. At that point, when he throws his guitar case over the camera (audience) and gets in the car, I distintly heard that guitar case land right behind me. I did a rewind to hear it again and sure enough, the sound of that thing hitting the pavement was in my back speakers. "INCREDIBLE!", I thought, "how the heck does it know where to put the sound coming from a STEREO feed?" I know it's some kind of digital algorithm, but that just amazes me!

Re: Dolby PLIIx - How Do It Know???!
It is almost certainly Dolby Surround encoded intended to be decoded by a PL/PLII/PLIIx decoder, which is how it knows the sound goes out back. The movie isn't that old...but I do think it is from the Pro Logic era and a great flick I also liked the original, El Mariachi, which was included in the SE package of the DVD.

Re: Dolby PLIIx - How Do It Know???!
This is basically it. The audio isn't technically Stereo, but matrixed surround. They are both two channels, but there are some critical differences. In matrixed surround, when there is a mono signal, it is redirected to the center and removed from the L&R. It is also possible to use phase shifting to direct the decoder to remove sound from the L&R and direct it to the rear. That is what happened with the guitar case sound.

Re: Dolby PLIIx - How Do It Know???!
As a matter of fact it does say "Dolby Surround" on the jacket of most of my Laserdiscs, but I thought that it only applied if it was connected via the analog RCA jacks. I thought the digital PCM track was straight stereo. Hm...learn something new everyday. That would explain some things.

If it is mastered that way, it doesn't matter if it passes via analog or digital, it will still be decoded the same way.
