Age Old Question: $600 - What would you do?

I know you've all heard this 100s of times. I've searched, but can't find any recent posts that address this specific request though.

I've got a Xbox 360 for gaming and HD-DVD movies, a PS3 for gaming and blu-ray movies, and a Motorola HD DVR as my video sources. Only the 360 is not using HDMI.

I'm looking for a receiver to accept at least 2 HDMI sources and preferably be able to upconvert my 360's component cables to HDMI and output to my tv. Also, I'd like it to be able to pass 1080p.

The receiver would be driving an aging, but gracefully so, 5.1 setup of Energy XL series speakers.

Any recommendations in the realm of sub $600 (street priced) receivers?

The Sony STR-DG1000 seems to be fitting the bill ($600 shipped from JandR.com), but I don't want to jump the gun before getting some more educated suggestions.

Lay it on me...but gently! ;-) Thanks!

Onkyo SR674 will do everything you need for around $500 (from www.accessories4less.com) and have a stronger amp section too... if you can afford it I'd move on up to the SR804 for $680 from J&R... or maybe the Yamaha HTR-6090 (which is the mass-market version of the RX-V1700) for $699 from J&R. Denon 887/2307 will also do the trick for $699 for J&R and less from unauthorized dealers. I would stay away from anything Sony puts out without an ES label... if you look you could probably find the DA3200ES near $600.

Stephen - thanks for the reply. Do all of these receivers pass/switch video AND audio via HDMI?

All of those pass audio as well as 1080p video via HDMI... there are several other models (Yamaha HTR-5990/RX-V1600, Onkyo SR803) that will pass audio and video up to 1080i but I didn't mention those as they didn't meet your intial requirements.

Hi Zach

In my humble opinion, the Denon is a maste switching receiver and prior year CES prior year winner. About $775 from non-authorized sources.

Happy New Year
