Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
Folks-
Like StewartG, I'm looking for a quick 'n' dirty recommendation on a receiver for a bedroom setup.
Recently acquired an Oppo DV-970HD and it running to a Vizio 32" LCD HDTV.
I'm planning on running the SVS SBS-01 speaker system with the default 10" NSD sub. (I can't wait to hear it--I'm running an Ultra in my living room, and have turned on many friends to the joys of SVS over the years.)
I am looking at 3 different receivers:
Denon AVR-887
Onkyo TX-SR674
Onkyo TX-SR804
HDMI upconversion is important to me--does one manufacturer work better with that than the other? Any general comments on these 3? Anyone more familiar with the Onkyo's help me figure out which one would be better competition with the Denon?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
Hi Andy
Not really familiar with those 3 models, however, the Onkyo 674 should meet your needs...I am particularly fond of Denon, and the Denon 2807 is famous for HDMI switching...if you can live without the factory warranty... available for less than $850.

Re: Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
The AVR-887 is the same as the 2307CI w/out the flat face and RS-233. It's HDMI switching should be on par w/ the 2807. I'd chose either the AVR-887 or the SR804 over the SR674 because they both use the Audyssee auto-calibration system for a superior room-eq to that of the SR674. The Onkyo would probably be my choice due to the price available from authorized dealers ($680 from J&R). Another option might be the Yamaha HTR-6090 (which is the mass-market version of the Yamaha RX-V1700) and available for $699 from J&R or $630 from Zoommania.

Stephen-
Thanks--are you sure about the Audyssy on the AVR-887? I thought the 987 had Audyssy, but the 887 didn't...
Thanks for the tips, though--I'll look into the Yamaha...

Re: Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
Looks like you're right about the 887/2307 do lack the Audyssee caibration. Onkyo SR804 or Yamaha HTR-6090 would be my choices... I have the RX-V1700 but it was a gift from my father-in-law... if I were buying for myself I'd get the Onkyo SR804.

Re: Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
Thanks Stephen. After doing some digging, it looks like the Onkyo 674 also has the Audyssey setup. I can't find a heck of a lot of info on the 804, and how it differs, other than its THX certification, which means nothing to me...

Re: Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
Ya, THX isn't much... The biggest differences are...
5lb in weight
a little bit of power
pre-outs (to add an external amp)
learning/backlit remote
RS-232
pure-audio mode (turns off video circuitry for use during music listening)
1 more analog a/v output
1 more optical input
phono input
cosmetics
The first four combined would make the difference worth it to me... power and build quality for now, the ability to add higher quality amps later, and a remote that can control everything.

Great info. Does the 674 have the same upconverting capabilities as the 804 as well? Thanks.

Re: Denon vs. Onkyo vs. Onkyo...
The 674's upconverting functionality should be identical... as to the quality of the upconversion and scaling I can't comment as I've done no comparissons.

Thanks. Also, any more opinions comparing the 804 and 6090? Features look very similar, and priced very close. I have a B&W 600 series speaker setup, Yamaha sub. I need two stages of upconversion, one upconverting to 1080i via component video (due to current tv's limitations) and ultimately to 1080p via HDMI once I get a new TV. Looks like both receivers can handle the two stages of upconversion, so I guess that leaves the audio performance/features as the main issues. Any advice/preferences? Thanks
