Onkyo Frustration 674e

Well, here I am 4 days into trying to get my Onkyo 674e to work...
I'm posting here in the hope someone can give me the usual 'oh, you Home Theatre Newb, stoopid, you do *this* to make it work...'

My spec:
Onkyo TX-SR674e Receiver
LG RZ32LZ55 Screen (takes DVI res to 1080, 768p native)
Humax PVR 9200T
Samsung DVD HD950 (upscales fine to 768p)

It really shouldn't be so difficult to set up, should it?
HDMI out from DVD to Receiver. DVI out HDMI out via converter cable to DVI input on TV (DHCP compatible).
Composite (yes, I know) from Humax to Receiver.
Optical audio from both sources to receiver.

DVD works but no sound on HDMI source (?) and sometimes (depending on start up sequence) resolution is horrible (looks like lowest, interlaced)
Audio from the PVR is stunning digital (surprised me) and audio from DVD is fine too, both are optical.
On screen setup for Receiver works on S-Video out, and HDMI.

I absolutely cannot get a composite signal (or S-Video) to be output to the HDMI to the TV, the receiver bleats 'Resolution Error'

How do I force the 674 to output 768p on HDMI all the time?

And, any other owners of the 674, is it supposed to get too hot to touch even when the vol is turned to min for hours?

Thanks in advance everyone.

I dont think very many (if any) receivers will upconvert composite video to HDMI. You will have to run a serperate composite cable to your television/monitor.

In other words, its nothing you are doing wrong, its simply not possible.

Re: Onkyo Frustration 674e

I just installed one at a friend's.
The 674 does not upconvert the signals from tht composite, S-video or component for that matter. It will only output it thru the HDMI as it receives it...basically, a pass thru.
DVI does not pass audio and ur TV is connected via DVI. Also, the receiver is set up at default with the HDMI audio off.
My friend's DVR is connected via component to get 1080i and it passes that signal with about 2 seconds of wait time to display. I have not tried passing any other signal but I would think that the 674 is set up to do that automatically because I never "told" it to pass the component signal.
I have not noticed the receiver being warmer than usual.
On another note, I did have quite a bit of a hard time getting everything to work properly. First of all, it was because the input were not what I expected them to be. For example, HDMI 1 is the first input beside the HDMI out. I thought it would be like the first one from the left. This is the same with the components. I also have had "glitches" where the sound would not be available and I had to switch it around or hard reboot the damm thing.

Well..I hope this helps. Its actually a remarkable receiver and I will recommend it at its price.

Re: Onkyo Frustration 674e

So, Eric, what you are saying is that the HDMI output will hold the composite video input signal - but on mine it only says 'resolution error' which apparently alludes to the Receiver not being able to interrogate the display - yet it works on the DVD?

Also, HDMI from the DVD carries audio, I don't care about the audio to the display? But I still can't get it to play audio over HDMI...??

Its annoying because the main reason I went for this unit (besides wanting a new amp as the old one was useless) was so that I didn't have the hassle of changing the tV input when I wanted to change from PVR to DVD.

Ah well.

Re: Onkyo Frustration 674e

It outputs audio thru the HDMI automatically actually. If u have DVD assign to HDMI, then it will process the audio from the HDMI. U might have to set the audio output of the HDMI to PCM. For us over here, I just used the optical output as I was having problems outputting DTS ES, DD EX thru the HDMI.
For the composite saying resolution error, it may have something to do with the DVI, HDMI handshake. On our unit here, I had HDMI from an HD PVR inot the receiver. The receiver is then connected to a Sanyo Z5 projector. The PVR kept saying my pj is not HDCP compliant when it is. I had to go to components for the PVR.
I also recommended this receiver for its single HDMI connection to the pj. So far, its working properly but I feel ur frustration with the stuff I had to go thru setting it up.
Here's a link to a long thread on the 674 at avsforum. Maybe u can get more info there. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=722446
