Is 1.3 just a firmware upgrade? I guess specifically what I am asking is, If I buy the Denon AVR-3806 will there be an upgrade made available for it? Should i wait for the new ones to come out in mid 2007 if I want HDMI 1.3?

There's no firmware upgrade to convert lesser versions of HDMI to 1.3. It's all hardware.

Just wait till late spring and get a new Denon with HDMI 1.3 and the new codecs for HD DVD and Blu Ray.

I agree. The only thing HDMI 1.3 will do other than have the new audio codecs is deep color. With HDMI 1.1 or 1.2, the HD DVD and the Blu-Ray player will decode the new codecs. In my opinion, HDMI 1.3 will not add much in the way for new receivers for quite a while if ever.
