THX Certified Receiver <$300

How big is the difference between the different variations of THX? I want to get something that is THX certified.. Why? I don't even know- is THX worth something? Anyway I'm looking for some good 7.1 receiver <$300, I went to Bestbuy and I didn't like pretty much anything they carried so those brands are out, lol.

There are many receivers that play at THX-certified levels without certification so its not the be-all and end-all. Some people feel that you are only paying a premium for the certification, and it's not a little.

Anyhow for a good 7.1 receiver - try the Panasonic XR55 or if you need HDMI, the XR57.

THX certification means several things.

1) There is THX post-processing that can be applied on top of the various surround formats.

2) THX certification implies a certain level of performance. At the $300 price point, you are not going to gain much in the way of overall performance, however, you might like the THX post processing. The top Denon models are THX certified.

I have 2 THX receivers that I like very much. My new one is THX Ultra 2 and I think it is going to be a tremendous product.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

Happy Holidays

If you must have a THX logo on your receiver, your best bet for less than $300 is probably a used Pioneer VSX-1014 or 1015. I own a 1014 and it is a heck of a receiver for the money.

No not really. Limiting yourself to THX certified components is a bad idea. There are many excellent receivers out there that are THX certified and many more that are not. There are some lackluster products that are THX certified as well. I don't think you're going to find a receiver in this pricerange that's THX certified, and in any case it's something I would not recommend. Buy the best receiver possible, and do not pay attention to whether or not it carries the THX logo.

I agree with JohnW. If you can stretch your budget to $399, you can get a brand new Pioneer 1016 delivered through Amazon.com

If you must keep your budget to around $300, a used 1014 or 1015 would be an excellent choice.

I liked having the badge on the front with a THX logo. However, I hate any of the THX modes. Never used them. They seemed to degrade the detail of the sound.

THX isn't a BAD thing, but as most have said, it also isn't 100% necessary. Like Dorian, I have a THX receiver also and I never use the processing.

Re: THX Certified Receiver <$300

Hi JG

THX Ultra 2 is another story, and a heavy one at that. I am just now in the process of getting my 64 pound Denon 5803A in perfect condition. Just needs a new front panel door. Denon rates it at 390 watts per channel @ 2 ohms, (dynamic power), in stereo mode.

Re: THX Certified Receiver <$300

Yes, I've heard the difference. A friend has the Marantz 9300, which is Ultra2, vs my 8300 (I get more output than my friend though, because my monoblocks put out 180w @ 4 Ohms ) but we're talking <$300 receivers here, not $3000+

Hi JG

I would love to see your new home when it is completed. I like the looks of those speakers you have, and you got a great deal on that sub. Next time I am in California...

I like Marantz too, and I used to look at the old Marantz receiver with the horizontal wheel and oscilloscope.
