ONKYO 674 turning off on HDMI with louder volumes
I bought the 674 recently. I've got it setup with 2 analog inputs and 2 HDMI inputs. I can play the analog sources at any loud volume. When I play either of the HDMI inputs, once there is information that peaks the volume, the receiver automatically turns off. Everything works great when I'm just watching TV, but when I get into HT mode, the damn thing shuts down.
Just to clairfy, I don't think the receiver is going into "protect" mode, the whole unit powers off.
Any thoughts?

Re: ONKYO 674 turning off on HDMI with louder volumes
Actually, it does sound like protect to me. Check for shorts in your speaker wires both at the back of the receiver and on the speakers as well as correct polarity, then check that your speakers are all working correctly. If it doesn't do it at lower volumes, you may not have enough power for what you are asking of this receiver, though the 6xx Onkyos are pretty solid. What speakers and how big is your room?

Re: ONKYO 674 turning off on HDMI with louder volumes
Also, what type of enclosure do you have the Onkyo in? If it doesn't have enough ventilation and you have all the DACS and the amps firing at max, it will overheat and shutdown. This used to happen all the time with my Denon until I moved it out of my TV stand and into the open.

You were right John, I went home and tested. I've got a short in the wall plate for my rear surrounds.
thanks for the reply!

I'm glad it was something simple.

Re: ONKYO 674 turning off on HDMI with louder volumes
Yeah..good thing. I just installed one at a friend's HT. I'd hate it if something's inherently wrong with the unit...AKA..bad for business....
