Marantz SR7500 Upconvert S-Video Worth it?

Hopefully this is in the correct forum. Ok, here is what I have:

Marantz SR7500
DishNW DVR 625
Sony SXRD 60" KDS-60A2000

I currently have my DVR connected directly to the TV via a S-Video cable. I also have a DVD Player hooked up via component. I think the component picture looks a lot better than the S-Video DVR picture. Here is my question. If I run the Video to the Marantz from the DVR via S-Video and then output the signal to the TV via a component connection, will my quality of my DVR Dish signal improve? Is it worth doing? Thanks.

Upconversion is essentially just a pass through, the quality of the signal is in no way improved.

My i ask what the point is then? this is why i can't see the benifit of a HDMI AVR
is it just about convenience? does a HDMI source sound better?

This receiver does transcoding, not upconversion - they are not the same thing, though the term "upconvert" has started to be used for this function for some reason.

The benefit is having everything going to the display with one cable and having both video and audio switching together. The downside is, you have to have the receiver on to view anything switched by the receiver.

I don't run any video through my receiver.

Re: Marantz SR7500 Upconvert S-Video Worth it?

There are a couple of reasons why using your receiver for switching may be beneficial.

1) You have more video sources than you have inputs into your monitor. For example, you TV/Monitor only has 1 component video input and you have a DVD player and an X-Box 360 both using component.

2) You have 2 TV/Monitors that you wish your video source to feed. For example, you may have a TV for casual SD viewing and a Front-Project for DVD or HD viewing.

3) Your video sources are far away from your TV/Monitor. Makes sense to only have 1 long cable run from your receiver to your TV than multiple.

I can't think of other reasons... Generally speaking, it's best to have a direct video source to TV connection minimizing signal loss, if any, unless the above scenario applies to you. Up-conversion in no way improves signal quality, it's merely convenient for the run from receiver to monitor.

Re: Marantz SR7500 Upconvert S-Video Worth it?

Thank you for the responses that is what i thought. i was tossing around the idea of a new HDMI AVR vs an older AVR but better quality. i purchased an older AVR because Im not gonna be bothered with HDMI. now i just gotta hope my B&k shows up (bought of ebay?).
