sony STR-DG800 or STR-DG1000
Trying to decide whether the upscale conversion and the onscreen display is worth the extra $400. is there any other big differences between these two models?

I'd get: Neither. In your price range I would HIGHLY recommend you look at the offerings from Marantz, Denon, Harman Kardon, Onkyo, Yamaha...first.
