If you had 7.5K for a H/T Gear what would you get.

I thought I knew what I wanted, but having second thoughts.

I am looking for a Processor, 7 Channels of true 200 watts at 8ohms, and a really nice DVD player like the Denon 3910.

What would you buy if you had this budget?

Thanks

Michael

Michael, I'm not sure what I'd buy, but my strategy would be to find the speakers first and work back toward the electronics.

At that price point you can probably be looking at separates for amp power too. Understanding your speaker efficiency and power requirements can lead you to understanding your audio amplifier requirements. Those components aren't going to change rapidly so they can be considered long term investments.

On the other hand, changes in audio/video formats are happening more frequently and perhaps spending high end dollars on very expensive front end decoders and processors isn't a long a term investment and therefore look to spend a bit less there.

Just my opinion. I'd be listening to lot's of real nice speakers if I were sitting on that budget.

PS Got a equivalent video strategy going on?

Yep - start with speakers. I'd set aside at least 1/2 for the speakers and the rest for electronics. Are you including video in that set-up?

If I had to do it over again, "I" would look at these three.
Anthem
Arcam
Cary
or a mix of these.

for the dvd player the new Pioneer Elite 79avi.

Pray tell us, o consumer, what thy speakers are.

Me being me, I'd go for full blown Lexicon, if possible.

You call that a knife?

I'd probably buy an anthem prepro and anthem or outlaw amps. The Denon DVD player looks good too. I'm having a major jones for a projector, so I'd look into that.

I'm holding off making any major changes in my electronics until the new HD DVD/BlueRay/ Dolby True HD formats come out and settle down. I'm afraid that anything you buy now won't be compatible with the new formats and i'll need to buy new equipment again in a year or two. My Denon 3803 and 2200 have all the features that really make a difference to me.

I am in about the same boat you are Micheal. I am putting together a new HTS with a budget of about 7K. I also have a good set of speakers.
Here is what I have decided on. Please, any comments would be appreciated.

TV - Samsung DLP 6167
Amp/Tuner - the new Onkyo 803 - nice features here for under 1K
DVD - Toshiba XS52 or XS54 - I know, I know, they dont support SACD, DVDA, HDDVD, or blu ray, but I'll add a second DVD in a few years. these have the features I was really looking for
Sub amp/TST - I am going to install a TST (floor shaker sub) in my floor so I'll need a stand alone Amp to power that
And I'm guessing that I'll spend about 1K on wiring and surge protection

and my speakers are Technics THX 125/250w 6 ohm speakers, I'll have to add a pair of left and right rears to get to my 7.1 - still up in the air about what speakers would work best.

Brian - let me ask a few more questions.

Based on your display choice, movies and TV seem to be your primary interest. What percentage of your time will you spend with video vs. music?

I haven't seen technics speakers in any of the shops I've visited lately, so finding a center to match your mains may be difficult. Have you listened to speakers lately?

I don't know how much a TST costs. What will one run you?
