Also look at the Yamaha 5890.
Look for some less expensive external amps as a possibility.

Shop for used set of SONY 9000es pre & pro. They should be around $400 by now.....

I tried some amps with the 640 but it does not have a 12 volt trigger and my wife really didn't like dealing with the extra power buttons. I really need the room EQ. I did try the Pio 1014 and liked it but it did not work with my DN DVR. Now I have the 811 for HD but the 1014 and 1015 are hard to come buy.
John is the 5890 the same s the 1400? Or is that the 1500?
Garrett have you seen any of the Sony models? I did not see any on Flea-Bay. Can check Audiogon...

I think the dn dvd will work, but you have to program the remote manually on the pioneer 1014, i could be wrong but, I'm pretty sure the op. manual can instruct you how to do it.

I had a typo. I meant DVR. The receiver would not recognize the audio via fiber optic.

Oh wait, nevermind... The TA E9000-ES pre-amps are in the $400 range, but the TA N9000-ES 5 channel amps are still like $700 (a little out of your range).

The 640 is a nice receiver but I don't get its potential without really eaising the volume. My favorite receiver in this price range is the HK 235 but it did not sound good to me with Paradigm-laid back speaker with a laid back receiver.
There are Pioneer Elite 52tx and the 9100tx on the Bay for about $420 shipped-new but refurbed. Wondering how these may sound. Also considered the Sony 1000Es for about $300. Thoughts?

Dont go with a Sony if you want the best sound and power for your money. If you can hit $520 or so shipped the Yamaha 5890 is a great deal. The Pioneer 1015 is also a hefty choice in your price range and cheaper.

In a room that size, I think most of the receivers listed are going to struggle, except maybe the 630 and the 5890. I'd say look at the least expensive solution that sounds good in your price range and add a 2 or 3 channel amp for the front.
My room is 19 x 20 and smaller bookshelf speakers have a tough time filling it well.
