Sherborn pt-7000

Is Sherborn a good company?
this is THE simplest stinking one I could find with 7.1 and about the cheapest. want to know if its reputable.

PS someone suggest a good 2 channel amp to go with this one.

While I'm sure it's a fine piece, it might be a little dated. I would look at a few others at that price point.

Chris, outdated? hmmm. can you explain?, I dont need 1000 DSS's and extras. outlaw is the only other in that range ive found and since sherborn has been making great amps for a while, I trust Sherborn 10000 times more than outlaw, at the moment.

PS how is Mt St Helens doing ?

This pre/pro is a little bit older, so I agree with Chris' assessment. Anyways it appears that the unit is almost identical to the Outlaw (the Sherbourn, Outlaw and Atlantic Tech (IIRC) all share the same OEM and differ in some odd details)

Comparison of the triplets:

Assuming that you've got additional funds for a separate power amp the alternatives include the Rotel prepro ($1700; no tuner though)... OTOH a straight $1500 is plenty for a nice AVR (nice offerings from Yamaha, Harman, Denon, Rotel, Pioneer Elite etc).

Sherborn and Outlaw are the same thing. Both are made in the same third party factories but Sherborn claims to spec certain higher grade parts. Go read the reviews/comparisons on Audioholics.com for a better idea. I get the impression the both are nice and both are well priced.

Here's another to a standalone review of the pt7000 and amp:

Sherborn does make a great amp, I'm sure.
Their pre on the other hand at $1600 (?) , just doesn't have the feature set that you can get on most pre-pros now days.
You may not want PLIIx, or audio sync, or software upgradeable, but you might later, and you can get that on a piece that costs about the same that should sound as good as well.

As far as the mountain, it is still letting off steam, but nothing big (unfortunately) is excpected.

from the above review:

Feedback from Sherbourn Technologies

Ron Fone, President and Founder of Sherbourn Technologies, Inc, has just phoned us with the following comments on this article:

Although the 'platform' of the PT-7000 is the same as Outlaw's Model 950, we
have made some significant changes to their product.

We calibrate all of the boards.
We use low leakage capacitors.
We have improved the video bandwidth from 40 mHz to 55 MHz.
We have radically changed the cosmetic...including a
much thicker front panel that perfectly matches all of our amplifiers.
We have added the elegance of blue LEDs to cosmetically match our power amplifiers.
We use a solid aluminum volume control knob.
In addition, unlike Outlaw we include a set of basic cables.
Plus of course the consumer gets the benefits of having a dealer's support and advice.

--------------------

ooooh blue LED's
and BS from the dealer who knows less than I do!

go outlaw!

Yeah, OK. I'd really like to know what "calibrating a board" involves. And I work in the semiconductor industry!

If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.
