Denon 2105 vs Denon 1804

I'm been looking at receivers for my first HT system for about 3 weeks. I don't want to spend too so keeping it under $400. Narrowed it down a few Denons such as 1905, 1804, and 2105.

I like the features of the 2105 but they are new and are about $600. From reading the specs, the Denon 2105 is just an 1804 but with auto-setup and component video up conversion. Even the brochure on Denon's website for the 2105 has a picture of the 1804.

I can get the 1804 for about $350 at my local stores. Good buy? Or are there other features I'm overlooking on the 2105?

Thanks,

Ivan

The 2105 and 1905 both have 7 channels of amplification. The 1804 only has 6. The 1905 and 2105 have PLIIx, component up conversion, and 100mhz component video bandwidth. You didn't day what speakers you were using. Depending on how much you've spent on speakers I would go w/ the 1905 or 2105 from that group. An even better option might be the Pioneer 1014TX. It has all the options the 2105 has, adds an automatic room eq, and has a much more powerful amp section. It's available for under $400 online.

Steve,

Thanks for pointing out the differences. I have a set of four Polk Audio R50 speakers along with a Polk center channel and the upcoming SVS 10" sub. All the speakers are rated at 90db sensitivity. Cost of all the speakers including sub is about $1000.

Aside from auto calibrating, I won't be using much of the new features on the Denon 2105. I'll be just using this for 5.1 setup with a DVD player and VCR. TV and DVD player has component video so it's good both can do component switching. Too bad the Denon 1804 doesn't do S video to component video up-conversion. Now that would be handy.

Given the price jump, I went ahead and picked up the Denon 1804 at Magnolias for $349. I think that's a pretty good deal compared to $649 for the Denon 2105.

In addition to the Denon 1804, I also bought an Onkyo 701 from Fry's too. They had them on sale for $499 which I feel is a really good price.

I'm going to be comparing the two receivers at home for the next couple of weeks and returning the one I don't like.

Thanks for the tips.
