MX-500 & Pioneer 1014

I can not get my Home Theater Master MX-500 to control the surround functions on my Pioneer 1014, even when teaching the MX-500 with the Pioneer's remote... anyone else have this problem and/or solution?

Tried these?

Quick press then release
Slightly longer press-hold then release
Press and hold

My mx-500 wouldn't work with the 1014 also. I had to learn the codes from the 1014 into a different learning remote I had then shoot them into the mx-500. It takes a little longer but it works

Which remote did you use as the "middle" remote? Because I just went out and bought an RCA learning remote and it could learn the Pioneer remotes functions but it could not teach them to the MX-500
