2 questions... Onkyo TX-DS787 and 6.1, 7.1

here are my questions...

anyone have experience with the Onkyo TX-DS787 ??
it is a THX unit, which to my understanding means just so much.. aside from the pricy liscensing (sp?) to Lucas.

is this a pretty good unit?? I saw where it only weighs like 27 Lbs.. seems kinda lightweighted for a unit with 100w per suround channel.

ok second question.. 6.1 and 7.1 ... all of my DVD's options have optimization for 5.1 and I have yet to find one that lists anything higher.. so I guess what I am asking is this... what does a 6.1 or a 7.1 do for me if the media isn't optimized for those formats?? or does the unit synthesize the output for the extra one or three speakers?? I am sure this is an elementary question... but being a bit of a dummy.. kinda wanted to know ... thanks!!

this is a fantastic forum.

Edit: corrected receiver model weight.
