Denon 2803 question

Okay - I've got a buddy who wants to sell a 2803... He's been using it as a preamp for a stack of old Phase Linears, and he likes to play LOUD. He says that he's not using it to drive the speakers.

Now, he says that it has gone into protection mode a few times. He says he can only play so loud before it cuts off. The Phase Linears aren't cutting (altho he _has_ toasted a couple of fuses, but he's used to that - if stuff isn't coming off the walls, he's not happy...).

So, do I want to buy the thing? Price is ~$500ish.

Yeah, but at the same time, why would it go into protection mode if it's just being used to control the stack? (I think it's two 700s along with a couple of 400s...). He says he can only turn it so loud before it cuts off... Does the Denon amps stay on even if you're running line outs to other amps?
