New HTR-5740

I bought the yamaha HTR-5740 ($299) as a A/V receiver since it was in my budget.
I only have 2 speakers as of now (atleast for a couple of yrs) paradigm mini-monitors.
what would be the best setup to listed to both dvd's and regular cd's (stereo)
right now i have the recevier setup for 2 speakers, no sub, medium room, 2ch Stereo amp processing. Is this ok for dolby etc?
also, has anyone got a yamaha remote to control the TimeWarner digital cable box? I'm having trouble with the volume control. I'd like to control volume and channel selection with one remote. currently i have the receiver set to a high volume and i use the cable box to control volume. this unfortunately produces some background hissing on afew channels (notably HBO).
also, if i switch to a DVD player or the tuner, and forget to turn down the receivers volume... it goes boom and i have to scramble to get the volume down.
how do people deal with digital cable boxes?
