NAD T773- Noise Question In DVD Input

My cousin has called me with something he noticed- whenever his NAD 773 is on and in DVD input mode, with the DVD player off, he hears noise out of his speakers. The input is strictly digital, and goes away as soon as he turns on the DVD player. It does not interfere with normal listening.
He held the phone up to a speaker, and it sounds like radio type interference, as opposed to a ground loop hum or interference from a dimmer switch.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

What kind of cable is he using (optical or coax)? Has he tried a different cable? Disconnect the cable when the DVD player is off, does the sound go away?
