Anyone gone from Denon 2700(or 28xx) to Outlaw 950?
The long form of the title is: has anyone gone from, or compared, a Denon 2700 receiver (or a later equivalent, e.g. 280x) as a pre-pro to the Outlaw 950?
I've entered this question in other threads but I wanted to give it its own thread. I'm currently using the 2700 with a Parasound 855A, though since the 2700 has only 3 pre-outs, I'm using the 2700's amps for the rear speakers. (I have no plans or romm for any more speakers.)
I use my system about 75-25 for music-HT. I use the DACs in the receiver for my CD playback and generally listen in Denon's 5 channel stereo mode. I don't care about the other DSP modes. I also use it for phono, SACD, the tuner, minidisc and cassette.
I know if I get the Outlaw 950, I'll be able to use my amp for all 5 channels, and I'll also gain DTS (though my DVD player has its own decoder) and DPL II (not sure how much I'd like that since I never heard it). On the other hand, I'd be losing the phono preamp, and a headphone jack as well as the $800. (And I'd be getting a lot of groans from my wife)
So it wouldn't be worth it to upgrade unless it's a big improvement. I know that Outlaw has a 30 day trial period which is great, but swapping in a new pre-pro and possibly swapping it out and then returning it isn't a trivial matter.
So my question again is, has anyone used a receiver such as mine (or maybe even a better Denon receiver) as a pre-pro and then compared it to, or replaced it with the Outlaw 950?
If so, would it be reasonable to expect a big improvement, or would the improvement just be a subtle one, or not all? Thanks!
