DTS Matrix 6.1

Funny thing happened while watching pirates of the carribean last night - my receiver display lit up with the source being decoded as DTS/ES Matrix 6.1 - i looked on the movies case and didn't see this as an option, just DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1. I'm using the onkyo TX SR601 and the Pioneer 563a dvd player
Anyone know why this may have happened??

Ya, the movie is Dolby Digital EX 6.1 as well as DTS ES 6.1. I agree with you that its stupid of Disney not to mention it on the case though

No such thing. Dolby Digital EX is a 5.1 format; even Dolby says so.

DTS ES 6.1
Technically, it's DTS-ES Matrix. DTS uses the "6.1" designation for DTS-ES Discrete.

Many movies with DD EX and/or DTS-ES Matrix do not so indicate on the packaging. For a regularly updated list of such titles, check this thread.

The only difference is the flag and the mixing. It's still 5.1 on the disc. You can and likely want to apply EX/ES processing to all 5.1 discs as it usually yields good results comparable to 5.1 ES/EX labeled mixes.
