Denon 3802 or HK AVR 7200?

I got the e-mail from One-Call about the sale on the AVR 7200. I am happy with my Denon, but I find myself considering an upgrade. I have a friend that is willing to buy my 3802, although we have not discussed price ($450?). Do you think it would be worth apx. $350 to upgrade? Also, what would be a fair price for the 3802?

Bill,

The AVR3802 is heavier at 53-55 pounds because it houses high quality parts. What it has over the 3802 are:

1. Dolby Pro Logic II in both Movie and Music Mode
2. Logic 7 [comparable to Widescreen 7.1 but more defined IMO]
3. High Current Amps [100 X 7 rated but actual test specs are at 140 per channel]
4. Dolby Digital EX [same as THX Surround EX]
5. Auto Calibrating Feature
6. 100 mhz Component Video Switching [3 inputs]
7. Triple Crossover Settings for all speakers

It is subjective whether you think the above features are worth the upgrade or not though I would assume most buyers would concur. Hope this helps.

George, do you mean that the HK is heavier? And there are a couple of incorrect specs in your list:

3. The 140 watts per channel was when only 5 channels were driven.
6. 50 mhz Component Video Switching and only 2 of those

Donald,

Thanks for the corrections. Yes, I meant that the HK is heavier. Indeed, the component inputs are three not two at 50 mhz not 100 mhz which is sufficient to pass 720p if I am correct. I read the 140 watts per channel ratings on a Sound & Vision article and it is at five channels not seven. Still though at seven, it is louder than most receivers with the same ratings due to its high current amp specs.

No problem. I just wanted Bill to have the right info to make up his mind. For what it's worth, I just received my HK AVR-7200 from Onecall on Tuesday and am loving it!

I had mine for an evening but got an offer for a Denon AVR-5803 which was too good to pass up. The audio on the AVR7200 is really nice but I am looking to off it. Have everything that came with it so it is opened but practically brand new.
