Well I managed to break (literally) my beloved ~5 year old Denon
AVR-2800 yesterday. (I accidentally hit it with a boot and it won't
turn on (remote or front panel), though the standby light is still lit.
Unplugging, etc. didn't help. I do intend to open it to see if
anything is visibly disconnected/broken.)

Beyond that I have two options -- fix it professionally (is it worth
trying in this day and age of disposable electronics) or replace it.

If anyone has words of wisdom on the fix it option -- please speak up I
am clueless. I haven't the first idea, where to go, how much it costs, etc.

The replace it option does have appeal -- the Denon AVR-3805 has some
sweet sounding features. Problem is, it won't be out till March(?),
and I'd be stuck paying list ($1200) for a brand new product. And of
course since I know the 3805 is coming, I couldn't possibly live with
the 3803.

Meanwhile without a receiver, my DVD watching and music listening is
totally done for. I can't even listen to the news...

OK, please don't tell me that not a single person at HTF has ever done an out of warranty repair? I can see it now: "it's broken? Cool! I can upgrade!"

To update my status: I did a "processor initialization" on my AVR-2800, and now it works, a little bit. The soft power key is still unable to turn the Denon on or off -- the wall plug must be pulled. The remote doesn't wok, and it is stuck in it's default initialization.

It can however be switched to DVD or CD and play accordingly.

It seems that there is some sort of computer/electronic circuitry problem.

Any and all suggestions are gratefully welcome.

Todd- Due to the age, the receiver really isn't worth that much even in perfect working order. If it isn't something that you can't fix yourself and a repair shop won't fix for less than $50 pesonally I'd turn this receiver into a second room standby. A backup is also a comfort. Good luck

Ted, Was your foot in the boot when it hit the receiver??? If you haven't already, try reinitializing the processor a few more times, it might just jog that suckers memory. If that doesn't work, it isn't worth putting the money into.

Thanks, guys! I've tried the re-initialization twice -- it's kind of wierd, because after initiating the processor init., the display just blinks forever -- I left it for over 15minutes the second time, without any indication of when/if it is done, until the power plug is pulled again. I'll give it another shot.

Laurence, no there wasn't a foot in the boot, mine or anyone else's

Well, I guess I'll be crying all the way to my 3805... Too bad I have to wait a month.

odd, all you did was hit it with a boot and it won't power-up? you musta thumped it something fierce....

have you opened it up yet? i guess i would see if you possibly knocked something loose. try reseating anything that seems like you can push down on - plugs, etc.

also, just feel around the circuit board .... see if anything is loose.

it doesn't sound like a fuse issue since you can get it to do the initialization thing.

finally, think of it this way...it's already busted...what harm can you do by poking around inside!

Yeah, there was a rather audible thump -- I think the heel hit it. There is no visible damage though.

That will certainly be my attitude, once the 3805 is out, and I can buy it at a moments notice. The initialization, however unsuccessful, does allow me to power it up by plugging it in (and turn it off by pulling the plug), and use it (without the remote) in DVD mode with all default settings. That sucks, but it is better than nothing. So yes, I could make it worse by poking inside. I could also fix it, but my hopes aren't to high: I saw a picture of the interior of a Denon AVR, and it makes the inside of a PC look like a child's toy -- there are enough connection wires and circuit boards in there to confuse a pro.

So yeah, I will open it, as soon as that won't potentially result in total DVD depravation
