Ironically, this question gets asked about every month here. Please feel free to view a similar thread from a week back:

Just to add my 2 cents if money were no object:

Receiver: If I was forced by gunpoint to use one: Yamaha Z9. Speculative since its not out yet but its the features king atm. If not then I would "seperate"

The top prepro IMHO is a tie between the Merdian 861(though I'd rank it higher) and or the Lexicon 12b

Speakers: Wilson X2's are up there for sure. I think they run north of $125,000 a pair roughly. They may cost double for all I can remember. The Kharma brand sure looks exquisite though.. This is the most "personal taste" aspect of this best of..

Amps: Non Tube: Lamm's are highly regarded. I think they are $25k a piece IIRC or a pair.. Krell's are highly regarded as well but they sound so dry sounding to me
Tube amps: Not sure. I wouldn't use tubes for a HT personally. For 2 channel I'd try them out and see if I like the sound or not.

DVD player: You could argue this many ways. Some prefer a Home Theater PC, some prefer a standalone. For standalones its hard to argue with the Denon 5900 for $2,000. The Meridian with its digital link is awful nice but I think it runs north of $6,000. Ayre makes a good player I hear too.

In the hands of a talented electronics engineer, custom designed components and systems can attain a level of performance that no store-bought equipment can match - no matter how expensive it is.

Manufacturers have to make compromises, even in the extreme high end - cusom designed equipment overcomes these barriers, and usually for less overall cost.

The hell with individual components....

If money was no object I'd hire the performance artists to perform live in my house each night, and build my own THX theater in my back yard!

Yeah, and then they trash your place.

At some point, equipment no longer becomes just function, but it starts becoming artistic and trendy akin to something you might find in the NYC Museum of Modern Art. And art, regardless of its merits and deficiencies, you pay for.
