A little advice on upgrading Receiver

Heres my setup..

Receiver = Sony STR-SL7
Mains = Yamaha NS-A200XT (x2)
Center = Yamaha NS-AC40x
Surrounds = Little matching Yamahas
Sub = cheap sony sub, (i live in a townhouse)

Heres my dilema..

The Sony receiver is junk!! Don't buy it even for your kids! There is absolutley no highs or lows coming from this thing, its all midrange. And because its all mids I have to turn it up pretty loud to make the dialog understandable, then when action scenes hit its waaay to loud. Im constantly adjusting the volume while i watch a movie. I think my mains would sound so much better with a little more power pumping them.

I live in a townhouse, so I have neighbors seperated by only 1 wall, so I don't want too much power, but I think with more low frequency I won't need to turn it up as loud.

Im looking for clarity more than anything, but eventually I'll be in a house so power would be ok. Do better receivers do a better job keeping the volume somewhat equal? Or is this just the way the DVDs are encoded these days?

Any recommendations? I have about $400-500 to spend on a reciever.
