I had 2 hissy units, the second one supposedly a fixed one. Got tired of being told it's me, not the 950. THis was before the most recent revision to the 950 was on the horizon. Bought an Anthem AVM-20 instead. It's better than the 950 in every respect (for 3x the price, it should be!).

Went to the Rotel 1066. Had the 950 for about 6 weeks then sold for $900 out the door (I was one of the first couple hundred who preordered). Did back to back listening over two weekends and kept the 1066 mainly because I didn't care for the 950 sound. For me, it was a bit on the bright side with my gear.

I didn't have any issues with hiss on the 950.

The 1066 is a great sounding unit for the price but I'm looking to move up to the 1098 or the AVM20 to gain some features or "fix" some quirks I'm not crazy about. Advanced BM, memory settings per source, changing settings by OSP only, etc.

Used the 950 for 3.5 weeks and did not like the 2 channel sound compared to the Proton prepro I moved to the bonus room. Got a 4ES but still was lacking. Sold everything off and got a Legacy preamp, same as Proton and am now in 2 channel heaven. The Proton and Legacy are doing preamp duties in my home and if I may add, the step down from 6.1 to 5.1 was not a problem as the Proton simply outbests the 950 in HT and music (IMHO).

Matt, no prob. Good luck in your search. Most pre/pros that I've researched have their pros and cons as well as their cheer/jeer-leaders. I haven't seen the perfect piece for my preferences yet.

I had the 950 for about 6 months. 1st a red dot (equivalent), had hiss; then a blue dot (equivalent), no hiss. Best experience with customer service I've ever had.

So why did I move on?

I set up (the latest version of) my system with Logic 7 in mind from the start. To be honest, I liked the 7.1 CES modes on the Outlaw so much, that I just gosh dern had to have the real thing. So the original plan was a used MC-1 plus a Sony TA-P9000ES 5.1 analog preamp. Talked to my dealer, and some of the differences between the MC-1 and the MC-8, and a good deal also, pushed me in the direction of the MC-8. Have had it about 4 weeks now.

Logic 7 is nice. A little bit more separation in the rear soundstage. But at least for me in my system, it's only really apparent if I'm actively listening for it. But it does add to the overall presentation. And the MC-8 is a whole lot more tweakable than the 950. But if you don't know what you're doing, you can really screw things up too. The manual I got with the MC-8, is by far, one of the best manuals I've ever gotten with a piece of gear.

But to be honest, when I factor in the cost difference between the 950 and the Lexicon, and the fact that I couldn't really hear any differences in 2 ch audio, I was really surprised by how competitive the performance of the 950 was. *And*, I gave up the tuner in the 950 and analog BM on the 5.1 inputs too... I'll be keeping an eye out for the "big brother" of the 950 when it comes out, that's for sure...
