Does anyone have any reviews on this receiver? I am thinking about getting the Yamaha HTR-5660 or the Onkyo TX-SR600. Not interested in the Denon or H/K.

Any input would be appreciated.

The Yammie has preouts for extenal amps, the Onkyo you listed doesn't.

What about sound quality? I can get either one for the same price. I guess the point is that this HTR-5660 is such a new model that I can't find any reviews on it. Does the SR600 still have the problems everyone has been talking about in the past. I do like the 60mhz Video Component Bandwidth compared to 30mhz in the 5660. Is the 5660 a good buy over the SR600?

That Yammie model number is the mass-market version of the RX-V630, the 5660 is essentially a slightly stripped-down version of the 630. The RX-V630 won the EISA award in Europe for Best Receiver of the Year 2002. Recently in a review of the S600 in the British "What Hi-Fi" magazine, they claimed that the Onkyo lacked spark with stereo sources, claiming the Yammie a better buy.

Construction wise both Onkyo and Yamaha are equally good. It is the sound that matters and in that case it is a matter of personal taste. I have always liked Yamaha sound but be aware that it needs proper speaker matching and in that term the Onkyo is very forgiving. Bright speakers tend to make the Yamaha sound very bad.

Internaly according to the Yamaha website, the HTR 5660 is exactly the RXV-630, only the exteriors are different and the HTR 5660 is sold by mass market chains and the RXV-630 is sold by few exclusive Yamaha dealers. Sometimes the exclusive dealers who are under tremendous pressure from the mass market chains are willing to cut you a better deal than HTR 5660. If you want the exclusivity of the RX-V series then you might as well check this angle out.

Either way ( Onkyo or Yamaha ) you won't go wrong. They are both very good.

I have the JBL SCS150 Home theatre setup that I just got as a gift. I have heard a lot of good reviews on this system. What type of speakers would greatly match with the 5660?

Actually the 5660 is the equivalent of the just released rx-v640. the 5560 is the equivalent of the rx-v630.

Thank you Vic I was gonna say the same thing, I will add though you really cant go wrong with Yamaha due to there world renounced DSP technology. I really like my Yammy and would recommend them to anyone.

Does Anyone Know the difference between the RXV630/HTR5560 and the RXV640/HTR5660...

I can't really see the difference. Is it just model year, or are there some feature differences?
