Alex,
I believe more Harman Kardon Ratings than Denon ratings. I think the AVR525 has more power than the 2803. But go and audion both.
Check this forum, it might help you.
H/K 525 vs. Denon 2803 strictly for HT? Page

I was looking at the home theater receiver buying guide and it indicated I should have a receiver with 76 watts per.

I think the more power the better, but I dont believe this statement is true by itself. I think there is a lot of other factors that makes certain amount of power necesary, like room dimension, sensitive rating or efficency of the speakers, level of SPL you want to achieve, etc.
Check this post by DUSTIN B (very good info)
How does a watt relate to the output level (SPL) of a speaker
But lets just make SPL chart and see, and asume that your speakers sensitivity is 86 (from a previous thread)
dB - watts
86 - 1
89 - 2
92 - 4
95 - 8
98 - 16
101 - 32
104 - 64
107 - 128
So a 70watts compare to 90Watts amp will only less than 3db difference apox 1db, that if the the denon is more powerfull than the H/K
