Send a message via AIM to Edward Schatz
I talked to my store's rep today who spoke to a Marantz rep last week. The Marantz rep said the upgrade won't be out until the 8300 is released in the U.S, sometime this summer. The reason being they want to move all the 8200 units off the shelves and it will probably take until then. Also, they are trying to get the upgrade free for U.S. customers but that is up in the air. Well....looks like we'll have to wait until summer time.

So, I guess that means that the 8200 won't ever get HDCD if the 8200/9200 upgrades will stay in step. I know that I could get a CD player with HDCD capability, but I'd have to send an analog signal. My guess is that I'd have to shell out a bit of money to get a CD player with DACs that can beat the 8200 in dual diff stereo mode. Music is of even more importance to me than HT, so I'm trying to measure whether any of these upgrades will improve my music experience.

ChrisDixon, the new 8300 also doesn't have HDCD decoding. I have my CD player using it's own internal dual bit (18 bit) DAC's. Although the 9200 on paper has better DAC's (24 bit), the internal of the CD player is much better resulting in better sound when using analogue connections.

If anyone is interested in purchasing the upgraded 9200 it can be found here for a great price! I would love to give this thing a listen in my system against my HK AVR 8000.

Well its not the upgraded 9200....I believe your misreading it as that...its comparing the two receivers showing you the upgraded features the 9200 has over the 8200.

Heywood,
It clearly lists THX Ultra 2 as a feature of the 9200. THX Ultra 2 is only available in the newest upgrade of the 9200 AFAIK.

Sorry, just a little confusion here.:b

I'd like to say that altho they list THX Ultra 2 as a feature, they dont list CS II or DTS 96/24 as such...So I cant believe it has the full upgrade as its only just announced on the European site. And on the Marantz N.A. site, they list the 9200 with THX Ultra 2 as a feature which would indicate that upgrade has been implemented on the 9200's that are presently going out the door. Just my observation anyways.

Heywood,
Perhaps they may not be fully upgraded but i know for a fact THX Ultra 2 was not an original feature of the 9200. It could just be a mistake at acessories for less website. Myabe those units don't even have Ultra 2.

Got my 9200 back from the upgrading process.

With it came an (Dutch) addendum to the usermanual with explanations about the new THX-2 and CSII settings in the SETUP menu and some explanation about DTS96/24 (automatic signal recognition) and the enhanced PCT.

First impressions are good. Indeed the signal delay has totally disappeared. The 9200 responds very quickly to a digital signal.

The sound has also improved a little. Detail and refinement on the mids and highs are a little better. Especially the clarity in the higher frequency region has improved. Overall the feeling of a more balanced sound.

The enhancements for THX-2 and CSII are both for creating a 7.1 sound out of 2-channel of 5.1 material and works great.

I don't have any dts96/24 material, so couldn't test that.

But all things considerate, the upgrade is worth it and brings much improvements.
