6.1 Question?

I have a 5 Channel Amp that I run with my Onkyo TX-DS787 Receiver which is 6.1 capable. I run my Fronts, Center and Surrounds off the amp and was wondering about running my Surround Back off the Receiver will this work well together or not. I use the Receiver as a Pre/Pro.

My Amp is the Acurus A125 which is 125 watts per channel.

I'm not familiar with that receiver, but if it has speaker terminals for back surrounds it can certainly be used to power the back surrounds while you use the 5.1 amp for fronts, center, and regular surrounds.

Many people with 6.1/7.1 receivers use separate amps for just the mains and center and let the receiver power all the surrounds as they are usually less demanding, but what you're contemplating will also work.

When you say 6.1 capable, do you meant there's a speaker terminal dedicated to the back surround speaker? You can run the front left/right through the receiver there for pre-out the center, l/r surround and back surround to the 5 channel amp. Therefore giving you up to 7.1 capability.

I think you are confused
Isn't the 787 is 7.1 ready!

manual page 6 :
100 watts x 2 front
100 watts center
100 watts x 2 surround (sides)
100 watts back (aka rear center)

BTW- Why aren't you using the internal amp(s).

Hey I'm trying to figure out how to make it 7.1 with out using a external amp for the sixth channel. I basically want to split the rear center into 2 channels so it willl be 7.1 in case I upgrade receiver.

7.1 doesn't give 2 separate back surround channels, just a single back surround channel played thru 2 speakers that should be placed close together.

If your receiver has terminals for only a single rear center, you can connect 2 speakers in series to get "7.1".

Unless your rooms huge you will not need the 2 backs. Just use the a center channel for your surround back. The receiver only puts out 6 channels at 100w and is capable of 7 with an external amp. I would not try to run that surround back in series so you can use 2 spaekers as backs.
