Streets of Fire (surprised no one mentioned this one)

It's hard to choose there are so many that are enjoyable.
Phantom of the Paradise
Rocky Horror Picture Show
The King and I
West Side Story
Grease

I too love all those great musicals from the 50's and 60's. However, I am a big Fred Astaire fan. My fav would have to be a split vote between Swing Time and Shall We Dance.

I judge musicals based on the music (and dance), regardless of plot, acting or whatever else. The dancing is top notch of course but there is also some of the greatest songs ever in those two musicals.

Here are some selected songs:
Swing Time (Jerome Kern)
The Way You Look Tonight
A Fine Romance
Never Gonna Dance
Pick Yourself Up

Shall We Dance (George Gershwin)
Let's Call the Whole Thing Off
They Can't Take That Away From Me
Shall We Dance?
They All Laughed

Astaire was a limited singer but I can't stand any versions of the songs but the originals.

BTW, I liked Grease II more than Grease. Plus, I liked The Wiz more than The Wizard of Oz.:b

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

It's a satire with the funniest songs ever plus its a grand example of a musical and unlike some of the joy-of-living musicals like singin in the rain (my second favorite) has an emotionally satisfying arc to characters that grow and change. Delightful and perfect from beginning to end.
