Re: Director Checklist - Neil Marshall

Jim, 3 years since you started the checklist series and it's still going on, I'm stunned.

Doomsday (2008)
The Descent (2005)
Dog Soldiers (2002)

Rankings

1) Dog Soldiers
2) The Descent
3) Doomsday

Ratings out of 5

Quote:
Saw Doomsday, the new film by British director Neil Marshall, who's films btw all begin with the letter D, Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday. The film is basically a melding of Escape from New York and Mad Max 2. A terrible disease called 'Reaper' infects most of Scotland and the entire country is walled off and quarantined. Years later it starts to spread outside of Scotland and a crack team is sent in to see if they can find a cure. Rhona Mitra is the heroine, in the Mad Max/Snake Plissken mould. The film is almost non-stop violent action, and includes enough exploding bodies and decapitations to make Rambo jealous. The exciting car chase finale is a direct lift from Mad Max 2, though the main punk villain is more annoying than threatening and cannot compare with Vernon Wells nutjob villain Wez in Road Warrior.

So, to sum up, Doomsday is Neil Marshall's 100min homage to the films he loved as a kid, but for all it's gory mayhem I was disappointed. It was too derivative and lacked style.
3 out of 5.
