Rank order:

In a Lonely Place (1950)
They Live by Night (1949)
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Bigger Than Life (1956)
Johnny Guitar (1954)

Another of my least favorite directors. Films like In a Lonely Place manage to squander good actors and good ideas, what a waste of Bogie.

And films like Bigger than Life and especially the absolutely horrendous Johnny Guitar are the epitome of everything that can go wrong on a piece of celluloid.

Johnny Guitar isn't the worst movie ever made, but I'm pretty sure it's in the bottom 10.

"Movies should be like amusement parks. People should go to them to have fun." - Billy Wilder

"Subtitles good. Hollywood bad." - Tarzan, Sight & Sound 2012 voter.

"My films are not slices of life, they are pieces of cake." - Alfred Hitchcock

"My great humility is just one of the many reasons that I am vastly superior to everyone else." - Ramrod Clerk

2. In a Lonely Place (1950) ***1/2
3. Johnny Guitar (1954) ***1/2
4. Bigger Than Life (1956) ***
5. They Live by Night (1949) ***
6. On Dangerous Ground (1952) ***
7. Party Girl (1958) ***
8. Bitter Victory (1957) ***
9. 55 Days at Peking (1963) ***
10.King of Kings (1961) ***
11.Run for Cover (1955) **1/2
12.The True Story of Jesse James (1957) **1/2
13.The Savage Innocents (1959) **1/2
14.Flying Leathernecks (1951) **

Nicholas Ray made some really personal movies within Hollywood's Studio System but his independant spirit eventually helped curtail his career and his last 2 decades were frustratingly erratic.

Unfortunately, a great many of those films of his I've watched have only received 1 viewing from me so far.

I have A WOMAN'S SECRET (1949) and BORN TO BE BAD (1950) as yet unwatched on VHS and I'll pick up IN A LONELY PLACE, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, BITTER VICTORY, KING OF KINGS and LIGHTNING OVER WATER (1980) on DVD eventually; the one Nicholas Ray film I'd love to watch most is THE LUSTY MEN (1952).
