I'm quite surprised that you've never heard of Walerian Borowczyk...although, admittedly, he's (inexplicably, if you ask me) the least-known today among the practitioners of 70s erotica (i.e. Jesus Franco, Jean Rollin, Radley Metzger, Russ Meyer, etc); also, you're mistaken in thinking that he created the "Emmanuelle" franchise, as he only co-directed the fifth entry in the series!
Even if his films are decidedly not for all tastes, I strongly urge you to check out his superbly strange feature-length directorial debut - GOTO, L'ILE D'AMOUR (1968) - which, incidentally, will be released on R1 DVD by Cult Epics next Tuesday. You may wish to read the following online reviews to see whether it's up your street or not:
