You just eliminated THE WILD BUNCH, which is pretty straightforward and not avant-garde, so you're contributing to the epidemic.

Besides, my own mindset is not to attempt to compile a list of classics, but a list of the best films among the candidates for the honor. A lot of great, best films are not classics for many reasons, one of which being lack of exposure due to lack of commercial appeal.

But, yeah, there's only about 6 or 7 people participating right now, so this is by no means a reputable, statistically significant list that we're creating.

My problem with SUNRISE is that the husband almost kills his wife but his wife forgives him, and they live happily ever after.

First, a wife should leave her husband if he attempts to kill her. Don't stay in a dead-beat relationship.

Second, I doubt the husband would be immaculately cured if he indeed were an attempted homicidal louse.

I understand why the film's so loved, due to it's beauty, but I can't get past the false nature of the story and my take on the film's message.

I don't think there are any true avant-garde films on this list. Maybe Bunuel's surrealist films could be classified that way. Outside of a Maya Deren, some Warhol, and Guy Maddin (and he is probably too steeped in historical film references to be considered avant-garde), I like very little of the limited avant-garde/experiemental cinema I've seen.

RE: Sunrise is "A Song of Two Humans." It is not the "story of Mary and Jake and what they did on an early fall Thursday in 1927." The film is a fairy tale romance, a musical with cinematographic, rather than spoken, lyrics. It does not, nor is it meant to, portray an objective reality.

Incidentally though, my wife hates the film for the same reason. Longtime readers will note that this episode was otherwise known as My Worst Valentine's Day Blunder Ever.
