Re: More Directors' Checklists - The Films of WOJCIECH HAS
In order of merit:
1.THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT (1965) ***1/2
2.THE HOUR-GLASS SANATORIUM (1973) ***1/2
An intriguing image from THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT in a book about Science-Fiction films haunted me since my childhood days before I had the chance to finally watch the film for myself via Image's DVD many years later; of course, knowing that it was one of Luis Bunuel's favorite films (he watched it 3 times, a rare feat for him ) only exacerbated my desire for it!
The film is a tremendous, mind-boggling achievement to be sure and, as a matter of fact, THE HOUR-GLASS SANATORIUM (which I only caught up with while in Hollywood last year) is also on the same surrealistically warped lines. Unfortunately, I foolishly missed out on a rare French TV screening of THE TRIBULATIONS OF BALTHAZAR KOBER (1988) some years ago; I don't know much about the rest of his films but apparently THE DOLL (1968) is his best film.

The Saragossa Manuscript (1965) - 8/10
The second half is astonishing, and if not for the somewhat ponderous first half, it would have rated a 10.
