A director I'm familiar with thanks to Criterion. Becker served as an assistant to Jean Renoir in the 30's, made a few short projects and then entered the military. Upon release from a Nazi prison camp, he began directing in earnest, but only completed 13 films before dying in his 50's.
1. Casque d'Or - A (Beautifully done period crime film/romance. One of, if not the, best "new" films I've seen this year)
2. Le Trou - A- (one of the best prison escape films, Becker masterfully builds suspense while showing us the prisoner's preparations in absolutely meticulous detail. The use of sound editing is superb.)
3. Touchez Pas au Grisbi - A- (Gabin is at his best here as a weary gangster ready to leave the game, but who feels obligated to help a friend out of a fix)
Own: 1
Would love to see more of his films

I've never heard of this guy, nor seen any of his films, yet I recognize many of his titles, which are on my to rent list for one reason or another.
"Movies should be like amusement parks. People should go to them to have fun." - Billy Wilder
"Subtitles good. Hollywood bad." - Tarzan, Sight & Sound 2012 voter.
"My films are not slices of life, they are pieces of cake." - Alfred Hitchcock
"My great humility is just one of the many reasons that I am vastly superior to everyone else." - Ramrod Clerk

In order of merit:
1.Casque D'Or (1952) ****
2.Le Trou (1960) ***1/2
3.Touchez Pas Au Grisbi (1954) ***
4.The Adventures Of Arsène Lupin (1957) ***
Unfortunately, I've yet to pick up any of the Criterion Beckers and I also have FALBALAS aka PARIS FRILLS (1945) on VHS; I'd be interested in catching up with the rest of his feature films.
