Unlike most of his more inexperienced contemporaries, Volker Schlondorff received formal film training in Paris and served as an assistant director to Alain Resnais, Louis Malle, and Jean-Pierre Melville before returning to Germany to become a leading figure of the New German Cinema. This culminated in his direction of one of the NGC's most successful films, The Tin Drum, which won both the Palme D'Or at Cannes and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Since that success Schlondorff has continued to make films in Germany, produce documentaries, helm international co-productions, and made a few films in America.

1. The Tin Drum - A (One of the greatest of war films, The Tin Drum describes the weaknesses and petty hatreds that distract people and allow evil to prevail)
2. Young Torless - B+ (In Schlondorff's first film, he uses a school setting as an allegory for the atmosphere and behavior that allowed the Nazis to rise to power.)
3. Death of a Salesman - B+ (with Dustin Hoffman and John Malkovich)
4. The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum - B+ (An attack on the ways the media exploits tragedy for profit, very good, if less well-observed and biting than Fassbinder's Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven)
5. Coup de Grace - C- (A countess falls in love with an army officer during a confused post-war period. Other than Margarethe Von Trotta's performance I found this boring and a chore to get through.)

NHONS, though I'm intrigued by "Billy Wilder, wie haben Sie's gemacht?"

"Movies should be like amusement parks. People should go to them to have fun." - Billy Wilder

"Subtitles good. Hollywood bad." - Tarzan, Sight & Sound 2012 voter.

"My films are not slices of life, they are pieces of cake." - Alfred Hitchcock

Coup de Grace
Young Torless
The Lost Honor of Katarina Blum
The Tin Drum (I HATE this movie -- I find it extremely unpleasant.)

Seen the above, in order of preference.
