Daughters of Darkness - C/Incmp (seen on film at the 1st AICN Butt-Numb-athon 24 hour film fest. The first movie that had me nodding off. Not even the nudity could keep me interested.)

2.Malpertuis (1971) [Edited English-dubbed Version] ***

First of all, I don't know why on earth MALPERTUIS is listed before DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS on the IMDB.

Even if Kumel is strangely dismissive of the latter at times in his Audio Commentary, I was very impressed with the film on first (and so far only) viewing; I loved its highly artistic look, Francois De Roubaix's haunting score and Delphine Seyrig's mesmerizing performance. Indeed, my original review of it might well be the longest one I ever wrote! I watched it via Blue Underground's original SE DVD but have since upgraded to the recent 2-Disc re-issue.

As for MALPERTUIS, unfortunately I've only watched a butchered version of it and even then it was a strikingly original work (with actors playing multiple roles and all the fascination of Greek mythology). I'm aware of a reportedly splendid 2-Disc set on R2 DVD released in Belgium (with two versions of the film) but the continuing rumors of an upcoming R1 DVD edition has so far held me back from purchasing that one.

Unfortunately, very little is known of Kumel's other movies but MONSIEUR HAWARDEN (1969) is supposed to be good as well.

The Arrival of Joachim Stiller **1/2 out of ****

Almost gave this three stars, but at over 2 1/2 hours it's really overlong. Still worth a look if you can track down the PAL DVD. (Xploited Cinema has it.)
