About 2-3 years ago, there was a traveling retrospective of Ichikawa's films which fortunately landed at the MFA-Boston for a few weeks. I caught alot of his films during that period, including the well-known classics "Fires on the Plain", "The Harp of Burma", and "The Makioka Sisters". I had seen the first two previously, and really liked "The Makioka Sisters", as well.
But my favorite film of the retrospective turned out to be "An Actor's Revenge". An interesting story of payback that's one of the most gorgeously lensed films I've ever seen, an almost textbook example of composing for the 'scope frame.
The other film that I really loved was "Odd Obsession" (I can't seem to find that on the list above), which is a near-farcical "la ronde" style chronicle of an art historian/professor suffering a mid-life crisis who injects himself with some sort of homeopathic Viagra to maintain sexual stamina; his wife, whose blushing, bowing kindness (somewhat) covers up her desire to murder the old bastard; their daughter’s fiancé, who the wife fantasies over; and the daughter herself, who assists in her mother’s adultery. Pretty daring stuff for the time (1950s? early 60s?), and its perversity is quite Buñuellian. About as far removed from the anti-war films (not to mention "The Makioka Sisters" and "Tokyo Olympiad"), but with some of the same sly wit and farcical tone of "An Actor's Revenge".
