The Return of the Return of the Director's Checklists - #509 - JACQUES RIVETTE
Truffaut once wrote that "the New Wave began thanks to Jacques Rivette". His early years saw him work with the founding members of the New Wave as well as other respected directors like Jacques Becker. His early films met with success but as his style developed his films grew longer and longer and thus, less commercial, like the legendary 13 hour Out 1, made for television but never aired. Often his films are stories of love and intrigue that mix in elements of other art forms like painting and the stage. He is still working today as he nears 80.

1. Secret Defense - A- (terrific film starring Sandrine Bonnaire as a woman who finds out the death of her father may have been murder. Takes elements of Elektra and Vertigo)
2. The Story of Marie and Julien - A- (a love story built around a mystery)
3. Gang of Four - B+ (A complex story of four actor roommates whose lives are disrupted by a perceived act of betrayal in this film about love, crime, sex, and trust.)
4. Va Savoir - B+ (A film revolving around love, the theatre, and a crime, woven amongst a large cast of characters. Would really like to see the "director's cut" version Va Savoir+)

Have La Belle Noiseuse and Wuthering Heights in my Netflix queue. Would love to see some of his eary films, particularly Celine and Julie Go Boating.
