Longtime friend and partner of Hayao Miyazaki. His films have a deep emotional resonance and a beautiful amimation style that mixes simple backgrounds with highly detailed foregrounds.
1. Only Yesterday - A (When you have a film like Grave of the Fireflies on your resume, one would think that's as good as it gets, but I was touched and impressed even more by this film. Perhaps bettered by only 1-2 of Miyazaki's films as my favorite animated work.)
*2. Grave of the Fireflies - A (Don't think I really need to say anything about this film)
3. My Neighbors the Yamadas - B
4. Panda! Go Panda! - B (Purely kid stuff, sweet and charming with a daddy Panda that is obviously the template for Totoro.)
5. Pom Poko - B- (Has its moments, but I was turned off by the violence of the film and its diffuse structure in which there really aren't primary characters.)
Own: 1 (Need to buy the HK or Japanese DVD of Only Yesterday since it's the one Ghibli film Disney won't release. I had Pom Poko on my hard drive from TCM but my wife accidentally erased it and I didn't like it enough to buy.)
