Re: The Return of the Return of the Director's Checklists - #503 - FRUIT CHAN
Popular figure in the Hong Kong film industry who's first projects were aided by other directors giving him leftover film stock from their shoots and saving reel ends from his editing assignments. Received notice for his trilogy of films dealing with the handover of Hong Kong to China and more recently received notice here for his segment of Three Extremes.
1. Made In Hong Kong - A- (Stylish, moving film about disaffected youth on the outskirts of the Hong Kong underworld.)
2. The Longest Summer - B+ (Deals more directly with some of the social and political issues surrounding the HK handover in telling the stories of a group of characters who's lives are affected by the handover in various ways)
3. Heart of Dragon - B+ (I have no idea how much Chan actually directed of this, but it was listed on his IMDB filmography so I left it on here. One of the few genuinely moving kung fu films, and perhaps the only Jackie Chan movie I've seen that has him acting outside his comedic persona, is this story of a police officer (Chan) who gives up his dreams to stay at home and care for his mentally challenged brother (Sammo Hung) )
4. Three Extremes: Segment "Dumplings" - B (I liked this the least of the 3 as the idea behind it is pretty played out. Unfortunately didn't realize that the flipside of the DVD had this segment extended out to feature length which most say is a vast improvment on the shorter version and ended up being the highlight of the collection)
5. Little Cheung - B- (The final film of the "Handover Trilogy" about a young boy left mostly on his own while his parents work. Befriends a young girl from China and they have various adventures)
*6. Durian Durian - C+ (Ok film about the changing face of modern China centers around a young woman who earns money as a prostitute before returning home to reminisce with her friends about their school days)
Own: 1 (I have Made in Hong Kong, The Longest Summer, and Little Cheung on VCD)

Saam gaang yi (2004) (segment "Dumplings") - 8/10
The best segment of the film, IMO. I probably should have watched the feature-length version while I still had the DVD out from the library.
