The Return of the Return of the Director's Checklists - #500 - VSEVOLOD PUDOVKIN
One of the most prominent of Russian silent directors, he was known for his humanist style, similar to what would later be called Neo-Realism, while still using the formal concepts of montage to terrific effect. Spent 3 years in a German POW camp during WWI.

Re: The Return of the Return of the Director's Checklists - #500 - VSEVOLOD PUDOVKIN
I haven't seen any of his sound films. Would like to know how his style changed over the years.
1. Mother - B+ (Wrenching work about a 1905 worker's revolt which initially fractures the family until the mother realizes the son's cause is the correct one)
2. Chess Fever - B+ (A comedic rarity from a time period usually thought of as ponderously political. Amusing short film poking fun at the Russian obsession with chess in which a man misses his wedding because of a chess game and he has to try to win the girl back.)
3. The End of St. Petersburg - B+ (Like Eisenstein's October, this was commissioned to celebrate the 10 year annivesary of the Russian Revolution. Takes a more personal approach in which a simple villager goes to the city to find work and unwittingly aids in the arrest of a labor leader. The film illustrates the sparse conditions of the proletariat that encouraged the success of the Revolution.)
4. Storm Over Asia - B (Pudovkin's last silent film is unique for its time in featuring a Mongolian protagonist and telling a story about Mongolians rather than Russians. In 1918, with the British controlling the area, he is cheated in a fir trade and then later arrested. He is about to be executed when the British discover he is a distant relative of Genghis Khan and decide to set him up as a puppet ruler. Breathtaking editing sequences, though a bit uneven in pacing and the Brits are portrayed in a strictly cartoony manner.)
