Born in Poland, Vertov emigrated to Russia to study film. Famous for founding a style which opposed Eisenstein by taking a more documentary approach to the use of montage.

2. Three Songs About Lenin - B+ (As the name says, this film is a tribute to Lenin and Russian progress in the years after his death. Spectacular filmmaking as long as one takes the content with a grain of salt and finds humor in lines like "We would give up the steppes and our land, indeed, we would give our very lives for Lenin!" rather than dismissing the film as simplistic propaganda)
3. Kino-Eye - C+ (Mostly dry film detailing various positive aspects of Soviet life including an insomnia-curing look at Boy Scouts visiting collective farms. Picks up towards the end when it moves to the city and portrays little-scene aspects of Soviet life like homelessness and drug addicts.)
