Re: The Best Film of 2005 Tournament
Sorry, Amazon didn't have an image for The Perfect Crime aka El Crimen Perfecto and I had to pull it from some Spanish site which doesn't seem to have worked out too well.
So it should be Layer Cake vs. The Perfect Crime
Rich, it certainly isn't a Spanish anime but a quite funny and absurdly over-the-top (in a good way) comedy from Alex de Igleisia. I think you would enjoy it.
I'm on a friend's computer and don't have time to add up the votes right now. Not sure if I'm getting back to GA late tomorrow or sometime on Monday.

Re: The Best Film of 2005 Tournament
Advancing
Hitch over The Forty Year Old Virgin - 2-2/die roll (didn't have a coin handy...does this mean I'm going to have to watch Hitch?)
No Direction Home over Inside Deep Throat - 1-0
Hustle & Flow over Rent - 4-0 (my vote too...H&F was the first movie soundtrack I bought in ages. Takes me back to when I literally wore out a cassette of The Lost Boys sdtrk)
Happy Endings over Me, etc - 3-1 (I would vote for Me, while I did find the actress and certain of her directorial choices irritating in a NY hipster/art scene/sit outside the coffeshop in recycled clothing kind of way, it still made me laugh. I didn't like HE at all outside of Tom Arnold being surprisingly decent.)
The Chronicles of Narnia: etc. over Four Brothers - 2-0 (agreed)
The Squid and the Whale over Thumbsucker - 2-0 (agreed, S&W was, I think, the last film to get knocked of my top 10. I guess that makes it #11)
The Perfect Crime over Layer Cake - 1-0 (agreed, Steve, you need to check this out...plenty of eye candy. Need I mention that the lead character is a manager at a Spanish department store who only hires large-breasted saleswomen?)
Sky High over King Kong - 2-1 (whoops, I agree with this as KK is a bloated CGI monstrosity while SH is fluffy fun but again, I didn't mean for it to get eliminated in the 1st round. )
The White Countess over The White Diamond - 1-1/die roll (WC is solid, well-appointed drama but WD is another trip into the unique storytelling and imagination of Werner Herzog and his ability to capture breathtaking images. I admire his passionate search for the mysteries that still exist in the world. That die sucks. It's going back in the box and I'm going to bring out my Dick Bavetta dice)
New matchups tomorrow

Re: The Best Film of 2005 Tournament
No Rich, I got it eventually. The first time I looked at the image there was just a red X. Last night I saw the anime thingy for the first time and meant to delete the image and just forgot. Today I see the El Crimen Perfecto image again.
Thanks Elizabeth. I'm search engine impaired.

Re: The Best Film of 2005 Tournament
It should be Sith vs. Fantastic Four. Image displays fine for me.
